Shafic
Abboud
Shafic Abboud, a renowned Lebanese painter, has marked abstract art by a skilful blend of Western and Eastern influences. Representative of the new School of Paris, he is fully in line with the non-figurative painting.
Born in 1926, Shafic Abboud began his artistic career by studying at the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts. In 1947, he moved to Paris, where he thrived on popular artistic movements and made decisive encounters, in particular with Hans Hartung and Nicolas de Staël. Abboud draws on these influences to develop his own style, characterized by organic shapes and bold colors.
In parallel with its international success, Abboud maintains a close link with Lebanon, whose history and culture serve as its inspiration. He has also been an influential teacher - at the Lebanese University and the Beirut School of Fine Arts - and an active member of the Lebanese artistic community, encouraging many young artists to pursue their passion and participating in the promotion of abstract art in the Middle East.
His work is considered to be one of the most important of his generation in the Arab world. In France, Shafic Abboud has received significant recognition. In 2011, a retrospective most of his work was organized at the Arab World Institute.
