Pierre
Bonnard
Pierre Bonnard is a French painter, engraver, illustrator and sculptor from the end of the 19th century nd he beginning of the 20th century. An unclassifiable artist, he is considered to be a modest and resolutely avant-garde spirit.
Bonnard places paramount importance on sensation rather than model and explores the canvas as a compositional medium. Although his artistic career extended from the end of Impressionism to the Nabi movement, he then freed himself from all artistic conventions and influences. He developed a new sense of composition by cutting his landscapes into successive planes and by imagining interiors where mirrors play a central role.
He maintains a close friendship with Edouard Vuillard, with whom he shares questions about the challenges of modernity. Galerie AB presented the exhibition Bonnard-Vuillard, A Friendship in 2023, bringing the work of these brilliant designers into dialogue. In 2011, a museum dedicated to the artist is inaugurated in Le Canet. His life was also directed by Martin Provost in the movie Bonnard, Pierre and Marthe, which is scheduled to be released in 2024.
