Chagall

1887-1985

Marc Chagall, French painter and printmaker of Russian origin, is one of the most renowned artists in the history of 20th century artE century.

After studying at the Beaux-Arts in Saint-Petersburg, Chagall moved to Paris in 1910. He discovered Fauvism, which inspired him with its bright colors, as well as cubism, a movement that marked him by its deconstruction of forms. In 1914, he exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Independants, and as early as the 1920s, his poetic and dreamlike works were presented in the United States, where he went into exile in 1941.

Back in France, he is represented by the prestigious Maeght Foundation. In 1964, he directed the Paris Opera ceiling, an exceptional commission by André Malraux, then Minister of Culture. The artist, wishing not to be associated with any specific artistic current, nevertheless shows surrealist and neo-primitivist influences. Chagall also draws his inspiration from Jewish tradition and Russian folklore, which allows him to develop a unique symbolism.

Since 1959, numerous exhibitions have been devoted to the artist's work, including the retrospective organized by the Hotel de Caumont in Aix-en-Provence in 2018. In addition, his canvas The Lovers was sold for 28,500,000 dollars in New York in 2017.
