Robert

Combas

1957

Robert Combas, a contemporary French painter and sculptor, played a major role in the free figuration movement, launched in 1979 with the publication of the magazine Bato. Alongside Hervé di Rosa, he is considered to be the leader of this artistic movement in Europe.

While conceptual art dominates artistic production, Combas prefers to devote himself to redefining space, color, and figuration. In the early 1980s, he initiated Arab Pop Art, an innovative artistic approach in which he created works of advertising inspiration. He then fully entered free figuration, thus becoming part of the news of his time by creating works in a colorful, graphic and simplified style, largely inspired by popular culture. His creations captivate the eye and invite a visual exploration rich in emotions.

Thanks to his talent and his daring artistic approach, Combas quickly acquired national fame. He is now considered one of the most important living French artists and his contribution to contemporary art is widely recognized. A major retrospective was dedicated to him in 2012 at Lyon Museum of Contemporary Art, followed by that of Grimaldi Monaco Forum in 2016.
