Guillaume
Corneille
Guillaume Corneille, Dutch painter, engraver, sculptor and ceramic artist, occupied a prominent place in the European artistic scene of the second half of the 20th century.
After joining the Amsterdam School of Fine Arts, Corneille embodied a “new creativity” influenced by surrealism. In 1948, he co-founded the international CoBrA movement alongside Karel Appel, Asper Jorn and Christian Dotremont in reaction to the conflict between abstraction and figuration.
Corneille's work is distinguished by its experimental and spontaneous character, reflecting the aesthetic evolutions of post-war painting. Her creations, based on the expression of color, are inspired by her travels and children's drawings. Imbued with lyricism, they frequently feature women, the sun, the bird, the snake and the cat. He manages to capture the raw energy and vitality of life through vibrant compositions and simplified forms.
The Guillaume Corneille Foundation, located in Brussels, is committed to the preservation and dissemination of the artist's heritage. His works are collected and exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, testifying to his lasting influence on contemporary art. In 2022, Arteos Expositions is organizing a major retrospective on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Corneille.
