Raoul

Dufy

1877-1953

Raoul Dufy, famous French artist of the 20th century distinguished himself as a painter, printmaker and illustrator and was associated with the great aesthetic innovations of the artistic avant-garde.

As early as 1893, Dufy began to frequent Albert Marquet and painted scenes of society from his studio in Montmartre. Under the influence of Fauvism, then represented by Henri Matisse, he gradually developed his own style, characterized by bright colors delineating relatively arbitrary areas mixed with designs of various elements. His works thus become an invitation to move towards a horizon of happiness.

At the end of the 1910s, Dufy's painting evolved towards brighter chromaticism and freer drawing. His masterpiece The Electricity Fairy, created for the World's Fair in 1937, is one of the largest works on canvas in the world. In 2007, his oil The Onion Fair reached the value of 6,049,636 euros at the Sotheby's sale in London.

In 1948, Jean Cocteau devotes a book to him in the collection “Les Maîtres du Dessin” (Ed. Flammarion). The Museum of Modern Art in Paris, which has a room dedicated to the artist, is at the origin of the retrospective Raoul Dufy, the intoxication of color, presented in 2022 at the Hôtel de Caumont.
