Lacasse

1894-1975

Joseph Lacasse, painter, sculptor and designer of Belgian origin from the 20th century, is known for his varied and creative work, characterized by the simplification of forms.

Of very modest origins, Lacasse shows an exceptional talent for decorative painting and drawing, which led him to enroll in the Academy of Fine Arts in Tournai at the age of 12, in 1906. After his military service, he enrolled at the Beaux-Arts in Brussels and then travelled to Italy, Spain and Brittany. In 1925, he moved to Paris, rue Mazarine, where he frequented personalities such as Maurice Denis, who had a decisive influence on the artist, and Robert Delaunay, whom he deeply admired.

Appreciated for his social religious painting, Lacasse definitively adopted non-figurative painting in 1934. At that time, he created the gallery The Team, intended to promote young artists. He joined the Free French Forces on June 23, 1940 and was given the technical direction of the Center for rehabilitation through manual and artistic activities for injured or disabled soldiers created in October 1941.

The artistic heritage of Lacasse is preserved in museum and private collections around the world, in particular at the Dexia Belgium bank.
