Lhote

1885-1962

André Lhote, painter, printmaker, illustrator and theorist of 20th century French artE century, was distinguished by its major commitment to Fauvism and Cubism.

Initially drawn to the bright colors and expressive brush strokes of Fauvism, Lhote quickly turned to the geometry and structure proposed by cubism. Although it is close to Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso and Albert Gleizes, he developed his own “synthetic cubism”, combining elements of the classical artistic tradition and the principles of cubism. Her bold and dynamic compositions incorporate abstract patterns into an interesting play of space and light. Shapes are often deconstructed and reconstructed to create unusual perspectives and angles.

In 1925, he founded the Académie André Lhote in Montparnasse, Paris, where he exerted a major influence on an entire generation of artists to whom he taught the importance of construction and formal organization in art. As early as 1959, a retrospective was devoted to his work at the Charpentier Gallery in Paris, followed by numerous exhibitions and events, including the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris in 1974 or the Marmottan-Monet Museum in 1974. 2014.
