André Marfaing, French Painter and Printmaker, Distinguished Himself in Abstract Art and Informal 20th Century PaintingE Century, especially through its use of black.

Settling in Paris in 1949, he first devoted himself to figurative painting, which rapidly evolved into abstraction. He Rubbed Shoulders with Artists Pierre Soulages, Gerard Schneider, Roger Bissière And Alfred Manessier. “Marfaing is one of the great blacksmiths that emerged after the last war, but he caresses this color with caution, tenderness and firmness. [...] Tormented and combative painting is giving way to an art without matter, where white, underlined by blue flashes, is charged with all the energy of a blade at the moment of striking.” Frédéric Edelmann

With abstract expressionism, Marfaing devoted himself to the search for the contrast of black and white, which he then decorated with spots of color. At the beginning of the 1970s, his practice evolved and now reveals a sense of appeasement, even purification.

In 2008, the gallery Berthet-Aittouarès Devote the exhibition to him Marfaing, paintings from 1970 to 1986.
