Georges

Mathieu

1921-2012

Georges Mathieu, French painter, is the founder of the Lyrical Abstraction movement.

In 1942, he began his career as a painter by approaching the gestural approach in reaction to geometric abstraction. He organizes a series of events to promote art that is free from classical constraints and conventions, which he calls Lyrical Abstraction. After teaching for a few years, he exhibited his paintings at the Salon des Réalities Nouvelles in 1947, which were noted for their texture made of stains directly from the tube.

As early as 1950, Mathieu acquired international recognition thanks to exhibitions in the United States and Japan. He is distinguished by his working method, using color tubes without prior sketching, which allows him to paint his canvases freely and to open up new perspectives in the field of painting. Between 1968 and 1970, Mathieu created gold decorations for ceramics from the Manufacture de Sèvres.

From 1959, retrospectives of his works were organized in museums in Cologne, Basel, Krefeld, Neuchâtel, Geneva... His work is currently present in at least seventy-nine museums and public collections.
