Jules

Pascin

1885-1930

Jules Pascin, an American-Bulgarian painter and designer, is famous for his expressive representation of Parisian nights and for his contribution to the École de Paris.

Born in 1885 in Vidin, Bulgaria, he studied in Vienna, Budapest, Berlin, and Munich, he studied in Vienna, Budapest, Berlin, and Munich before settling in Paris, where he quickly became known under the nickname “Prince of Montparnasse.” While turning away from Fauvism and Cubism, Pascin indulgently describes the shitty world of “girls” in Paris. His graphic style and vibrant line subtly outline the contours of bodies, creating a suggestive atmosphere.

“Why is a woman considered less obscene from the back than from the front, why is a pair of breasts, a navel, and a pubis still considered immodest nowadays, where does this censorship, this hypocrisy come from?”

The artist thus succeeds in capturing his models in a light that reflects their state of mind more than their physical reality. His sketchbooks are imbued with a voluptuous nostalgia, sometimes tinged with eroticism, illustrating the emotion he feels towards his subjects.

Pascin's works are preserved in important museums around the world, while numerous galleries regularly present his work.
