Arpad

Szenes

1897-1985

Árpád Szenes, a French non-figurative painter of Hungarian origin, is similar to the new School of Paris.

In 1928, at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière (Paris), the artist met his future wife, the painter Marie-Helene Vieira da Silva. In 1930, the couple moved to the Villa des Camélias in Paris. Faced with the growing threat of Nazi Germany, he chose to take refuge in Portugal in 1939, then in 1940, in Brazil.

Between 1940 and 1950, Arpad Szenes worked on the theme of “Banquets”, landscape and space. In 1944, Árpád Szenes taught, opened a painting studio and exhibited his works at the Institute of Brazilian Architects, where he also gave a conference on the function of Art. In 1947, the couple returned to Paris.
