Seaside in the Midi, 1921, Sanguine on paper, 10.4 x 15.6 cm, Monogram stamp lower right, Antoine Terrasse stamp lower right

As early as 1904, Bonnard discovered the south of France by visiting his friend Vuillard in Saint-Tropez. He would multiply his stays there until he settled in Le Cannet in 1920. Every day, he surveys the region and takes notes on his notebooks. The curve of the hills, the vegetation, the luminosity of the sea, everything is enchanting. Transcribed as soon as he returned to canvas, these drawings are the precious testimonies of his feelings in the face of this nature and the warm light of the South, admirably restored here by the red color of red blood. The panoramic composition dear to the artist invites us to embrace the broad perspective where the sea merges with the sky.
