He is the undisputed master of black painting, of a radical abstraction at the service of matter and light. Pierre Soulages (1919-) is one of the last great figures of modern art. “I did printmaking because, with engraving, something appeared, something that could not appear in painting.” With this simple sentence, the artist sets the scene for this new pictorial universe, where tools that cut copper or fine stone and machines replace brushes, brushes and other knives.
