Alexander Calder

Alexander Calder (1898-1976) was a renowned American sculptor, best known for his invention of the mobile, a form of kinetic sculpture that uses suspended moving elements. He is also known for his stabiles, abstract metal sculptures anchored to the ground.

Born on July 22, 1898 in Lawnton, Pennsylvania, Calder was the son of sculptor Alexander Stirling Calder and the grandson of sculptor Alexander Milne Calder. He studied at the Stevens Institute of Technology and then took courses at the Art Students League in New York.
