Armand Fernandez, better known under the name of Arman, was a French-American artist, born on November 17, 1928 in Nice, France, and died on October 22, 2005 in New York.
He was associated with the New Realism artistic movement, a European artistic movement that emerged in the 1960s.
New Realism sought to integrate everyday reality into art, using everyday objects and materials in their works. Arman was particularly known for his “accumulations” and his “artistic trash cans.”
In his accumulations, he grouped together repetitive or similar objects to create artistic compositions. Artistic trash cans consisted of discarded or abandoned objects, often framed or presented as works of art. His work evolved over the years, and he also created monumental sculptures, installations, collages, and other artistic forms.
Influence of the CoBrA movement
As one of the founding members of the CoBrA movement, Appel has contributed significantly to the evolution of contemporary art. The movement attracted attention by rejecting established artistic conventions in favor of a more spontaneous and expressive approach.
Distinctive style
Karel Appel had a distinctive artistic style characterized by bright colors, abstract shapes, and gestural expressiveness. His work was often seen as daring and innovative, which contributed to his appeal to collectors and art lovers.
International reputation
Appel has earned an international reputation over the years through exhibitions around the world. His participation in major artistic events and his influence on the contemporary art scene have contributed to strengthening his status.
Artistic heritage
The death of the artist in 2006 also increased interest in his work. Often, the scarcity of works by deceased artists can increase their value on the art market.
