Camille Claudel, born in 1864 in Fère-en-Tardenois, was a highly talented French sculptor, whose work marked the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries.
Her passion for art led her to study at the Académie Colarossi in Paris, where she developed her skills in sculpture.
Claudel is particularly known for her collaboration with the renowned sculptor Auguste Rodin. She joined his studio in 1884 as an assistant, but their relationship evolved into a complex romantic passion that influenced their respective works.
Although Claudel was often overshadowed by Rodin's fame, she created sculptures of exceptional expressiveness and remarkable anatomical precision. Among his most important works are “Middle Ages,” a harrowing depiction of the complexities of human relationships, and “The Waltz,” a dynamic sculpture that captures the graceful movement of dance.
These pieces reflect Claudel's emotional sensitivity and ability to express complex themes through sculpture.
Despite the artistic recognition she obtained during her career, Claudel experienced difficulties, including mental disorders. She was interned in 1913 and spent most of her later life in a mental institution. Camille Claudel died in 1943 in Montdevergues, France.
