Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) was a French painter, sculptor and printmaker, best known for being one of the founders of the Art Brut artistic movement.
Born in Le Havre, Dubuffet studied law and philosophy before turning to art in the late 1930s. Jean Dubuffet was a relentless critic of established artistic conventions and sought to develop a more spontaneous and brutal approach to artistic creation. He invented the term “Art Brut” to describe art created outside academic standards, produced by self-taught people, marginalized people, or people with mental disorders.
Art Brut was characterized by a spontaneity, simplicity, and authenticity that Dubuffet often found absent in traditional art. Dubuffet's work is also associated with the informal art movement and abstract expressionism.
He created works characterized by rough textures, energetic lines, and a bold palette. His experimental artistic approach and his rejection of conventions have influenced many contemporary artists. Beyond his artistic work, Dubuffet was also a prolific writer, editor, and collector.
Her impact on the modern art world has been significant, and her commitment to creative exploration continues to inspire generations of artists.
