Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) was a French painter, sculptor and printmaker, best known for being one of the founders of the Art Brut artistic movement.
Born in Le Havre, Dubuffet studied law and philosophy before turning to art in the late 1930s. Jean Dubuffet was a relentless critic of established artistic conventions and sought to develop a more spontaneous and brutal approach to artistic creation. He invented the term “Art Brut” to describe art created outside academic standards, produced by self-taught people, marginalized people, or people with mental disorders.
