Jean FAUTRIER

Jean Fatrier (1898-1964) was a French painter and sculptor, often associated with the informal art movement. Born in Paris, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and was initially influenced by cubism. However, during the 1920s and 1930s, it evolved into a more personal style.

Fatrier is best known for his series of works entitled “Hostages” created during the Second World War. These abstract works, characterized by textured surfaces and impastos, were made in response to the atrocities of war. The “Hostages” represent human figures in a way that evokes suffering and tragedy.

After the war, Fatrier continued to develop his informal style, exploring gestural abstraction and pictorial material. His later works often feature a thick and expressive texture, creating surfaces that are rich in relief.

In addition to painting, Fatrier has also worked in sculpture, exploring abstract and organic forms. His work had a significant impact on the informal movement and contributed to broadening the horizons of artistic expression in the wake of the Second World War.

Informal art

Jean Fatrier is often associated with the informal art movement, which developed in the 1940s and 1950s. Informal art, also called lyrical abstraction, is characterized by a spontaneous, gestural, and often abstract approach to painting. Fatrier was one of the precursors of this movement, and his commitment to this innovative aesthetic contributed to his artistic attractiveness.

Tachist works

Prior to his involvement in informal art, Fatrier was also associated with the Tachist movement. Tachism is characterized by the use of spontaneous stains and gestures, creating a dynamic pictorial surface. Fatrier's Tachist works are appreciated for their expressiveness and formal experimentation.

The “Hostages” series

One of Jean Fatrier's most famous and iconic works is his series of paintings entitled “Hostages,” created after the Second World War. These works represent deformed and emaciated faces, symbolizing the suffering of the hostages during the war. The “Otages” series is often considered a masterpiece of modern art and contributed to Fatrier's fame.

Influence on contemporary art

Fatrier's involvement in innovative artistic movements such as informal art has had an influence on subsequent generations of artists. Her experimental approach and her ability to transcend artistic boundaries have inspired other contemporary artists.

Participation in important exhibitions

Fatrier participated in major exhibitions during his career, including the Salon des Réalities Nouvelles and the Salon d'Automne in Paris. His presence in these exhibitions contributed to his visibility in the artistic world.

Posthumous recognition

Although Fatrier encountered financial difficulties and a lack of recognition during his lifetime, his work was revalued and recognized posthumously. This has led to a growing interest in his works on the art market.
