Karel Appel (1921-2006) was a Dutch painter and sculptor, also associated with the Cobra artistic movement. The CoBrA movement, active in the 1940s and 1950s, brought together artists from Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam. The group promoted an experimental and expressive approach to art, seeking to break with established artistic conventions.
