Nasser Assar (1928-2011) was a painter of Iranian origin, born in Tehran. At the age of seven, he began exploring painting and calligraphy. After studying at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Tehran, he made the decision to move to Paris in 1953 to broaden his artistic horizons. Its culture was steeped in poetry and philosophy, and its artistic influences were varied, ranging from the Romantic tradition to artists such as Bonnard and Giacometti. He was also influenced by Chinese painting of the High Period, understanding in this oriental art the value of real space and the spontaneity of the gesture.
Nasser Assar was associated with the “Nuagism” movement by the art critic Julien Alvard, although he himself considered himself more of a painter of non-figuration. Over the years, his work has evolved from abstraction to representations of plant and animal forms, including trees, meadows, rocks, and pieces of the sky. The light in his work seems to be inherent in the material and color of the elements, testifying to his connection with nature.
Nasser Assar has participated in several solo and group exhibitions, contributing to artistic movements such as “Antagonisms” at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. His death occurred in 2011 in Paris.
