Suzanne Valadon (1865-1938) was a French painter and an iconic figure on the Parisian art scene in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She is also known for being the mother of the famous artist Maurice Utrillo.
Born Marie-Clémentine Valadon in Bessines-sur-Gartempe, France, she moved to Montmartre, a bohemian neighborhood in Paris, at a young age. Originally, she worked as an acrobat at the circus before becoming a model for numerous artists of the time, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Valadon became a self-taught painter herself, embarking on an independent artistic career.
Valadon's style was often bold and expressive, characterized by portraits, nudes, and scenes from daily life. She was the first woman to be admitted to the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts de France in 1894. His artistic career was marked by his independence and his refusal of genre conventions.
